JANUARY PICKS: ARTISTS TO LOOK OUT FOR

JAYAHADADREAM

2025 was a standout year for breakthrough rapper Jayahadadream, who is firmly positioning herself in Grime and UK hip-hop. One of her many commendable qualities is her study of the game, coupled with her unwavering consistency and self-assurance, proving she is in it for the long run. Her name reflects her determination to pursue her ambitions. While remaining realistic about the highs and lows that come with navigating increased fame and protecting her personal life and integrity.

On tracks like ‘State of World,’ Jaya narrates her decision to quit her teaching job to pursue music full-time. It’s a vulnerable, storytelling record that weighs ambition against the emotional toll. Collaborating with Frisco on ‘Hide Out,’ he remains a clear peer and mentor for the young MC, highlighting the seamless integration between generations and her contribution to evolving the sound. Similarly, ‘Main Characters’ with Big Zuu cuts through the superficiality, facades and dishonesty – it reaffirms her integrity as an artist who values quality and authenticity.

WESLEY JOSEPH

After a compilation of highly rated EPs and features with some of the most compelling lyricists such as Loyle Carner and Jorja Smith, Wesley Joseph is gearing up for his long-awaited debut album, Forever Ends Sunday. His sound is a textual exploration of genre-hopping experiences that seamlessly blend alternative rap, avant-RnB and elements of psychedelic. Above all, it’s his deep-rooted connection to soul that stems from his father’s extensive collection of soul records that is anchored in his artistry.

There’s a profound sense of self-reflection, leading to self-discovery in his lyrical and sonic content. His vivid storytelling and emotional despondency are contrasted by his ability to radiate warmth and create a sense of overcoming. On ‘Peace of Mind’, his production shines, complemented by his determined rap verses and harmonic chorus. As he teams up Danny Brown, the track blends the subsections of UK and American rap.

Wesley Joseph is a creative visionary who has pushed his imagination into the realms of fashion and filmmaking, now coming full circle in his debut album.

BLESSION

Blession embodies the intimacy, inviting and richness of the alte scene, influenced by the likes of Odeal, Jay-O and DELE.  His dreamy, 80s-inspired atmospheric sound is complemented by his eternal falsetto, bridging R&B with Alte. On ‘Talk 2 You,’ his graceful vocals and soft drums explore the circular and addictive nature of desiring a lover from the past and the inability to move forward. ‘Vendetta’ conveys the sensual and seductive aspects of RnB. Meanwhile, ‘SHEGO’  has a harder-hitting base and Mustard-like high hats contrasted by his sweet vocal range.

Beyond his own releases, his talent exceeds his own releases, having co-writing credits on Tiwa Savage’s This One is Personal album and Issiah Falls ‘Butterflies.’
